Who I am

Hi, I’m Jay Key (he/they), a clinical mental health counselor based in Durham, NC. For over eight years, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals and communities both in the Triangle and in Philadelphia, helping people navigate some of life’s toughest moments. My journey into counseling began with my own experiences as a teenager, often feeling alone or like a burden. Even though I wasn’t and you aren’t, it left me feeling very isolated. I know firsthand how isolating that can be, and it’s part of what drives my passion for making sure no one else has to face those feelings without support.

I specialize in working with clients who feel hopeless or disconnected, and I believe that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most powerful tools for healing. I also have extensive experience working with youths struggling with authority, as well as clients dealing with ADHD, anxiety, and trauma. No matter the challenge, I’m here to walk alongside you, helping you feel heard, valued, and understood.

Therapeutic approach

My approach to therapy is rooted in the belief that every individual deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. I practice a person-centered, trauma-informed approach, meaning that I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship based on empathy, trust, and mutual respect. I believe that healing begins with understanding, and I work alongside my clients to create a space where they feel safe exploring their thoughts and emotions. Whether we’re addressing anxiety, trauma, ADHD, or struggles with authority, my goal is to provide you with the tools and support you need to move forward with confidence and resilience. Together, we’ll navigate life’s challenges at your pace, always focused on what feels right for you.

Personal values and inclusivity

I am deeply committed to creating a space where every person feels valued, respected, and affirmed, regardless of their background or identity. As an LGBTQ-affirming therapist, I have had the honor of working with gay, queer, and trans individuals, and I strive to offer a welcoming environment where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment. My practice is also rooted in social justice, and much of my career has been dedicated to supporting those who have been marginalized or underserved, particularly lower-income Black and Hispanic clients. I understand that systemic inequities can impact mental health, and I approach therapy with a strong sense of advocacy and empathy. Though I do not speak Spanish, I am committed to providing culturally responsive care and ensuring that everyone who walks through my door feels empowered to express themselves and find healing.

Why bunnies?

You might notice that instead of the usual calming streams or serene landscapes, the images on this site feature bunnies. That’s no accident! My partner and I have a deep love for these gentle creatures, and we believe they embody the qualities we value most in therapy: calm, patience, and connection. Our bunnies, Bri and Rosie, have been a source of joy and comfort in our lives, reminding us daily of the importance of nurturing and care — both for others and for ourselves. Because they are prey animals, they often can act wary of me, and so I have spent countless days earning and building their trust. Bunnies also represent the quiet resilience and gentleness that I strive to bring into every session, helping you find peace and healing in even the toughest moments. Plus, who couldn’t use a little more bunny in their life?
